Parents' Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION: When does the 2010 Staten Island Lightning season begin?

ANSWER: Tryouts for the 2010 Staten Island Lightning will be held in February 2010. Each age group will have at least two tryouts dates. Full-time practice begins in the beginning of March (after CYO/H.S. season ends), and our tournament season commences in the end of March.

QUESTION: How many tournaments will our team play?

ANSWER: Each Lightning team will be guaranteed a minimum of seven (7) tournaments per season. (Approximately 25-35 games) The tournaments will begin in the middle / end of March and continue through June with teams playing approximately every other weekend. Based on team success, parent/player enthusiasm, and sufficient fundraising, teams may play more than seven tournaments.

QUESTION: How much will the 2010 Lightning season cost?

ANSWER: Returning Lightning players will pay $385 per child for registration (assuming the player does not need a new uniform). New Lightning players and returning Lightning players that need a new uniform will pay $475 per child, and this includes a new uniform. The registration fees alone do not cover the entire expenses to fund the Lightning program. Tournaments, Insurance, gym time, uniforms, and AAU club fees exceed the amount of registration fees that are collected. As a result, fund raising will be done by coaches, parents, and players in order to keep registration fees as low as possible.

QUESTION: How often will practice be held?

ANSWER: Practice will be held at the Our Lady Star of the Sea Athletic Complex, the Olympia Center @ St. Margaret Mary, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish Center. In addition, coaches are urged to utilize public facilities (C.S.I., Clove Lakes, etc.) once the weather permits.  Due to limited gym available, practice is usually held 1-2 times per week, but may occur more on an exception basis.
